Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is circle time, whole group, reading, writing, math, grammar, and enrichment. I want all my students to be able to speak English and meet the state standards in all areas. My favorite quote is: "All children are capable of success. No exceptions." My students will soar.

The students in my class are 5-6 year old kindergarten students.

They are learning the English language for the first time. Some of the students have parents who do not speak any English. For these students, it is really hard because they do not have some one to help them practice the English language. Thus, the responsibility falls on the student to push through the language barrier and learn the language on their own. My school is economically in need of resources. Most of the students receive free and reduced lunch. At home, a lot of the students do not have materials, books, or school supplies to help them with their studies. Our school also has uniforms, so some students are in need of these. We end up sending them to "School Bell". This is a place that gives the student clothes, a book, a hat, and other things the student may need. The teachers always want the best for their students and make sure that all students succeed.

My Project

The classroom rug will be used for both whole and small group instruction in reading and math. During reading, the students will be learning letters, sounds, sight words, and reading decodable books on the carpet. In math, I plan on adding index cards to the rug, so the students can learn numbers and count objects. The document camera will allow me to project a worksheet, article, book or magazine. This will help the students see the connection between the concepts they are learning and the real world. The book cube will give me much needed storage for my big books. Right now, I am having to hold the book in my hand and turn it. The book cube has a ledge that will allow me to display the book and focus more on my instruction. The students will be able see the pages better because my finger will not be in the way. The students will also be forming nonsense words on the magnetic portion. I will have them say the sounds in the words.

The donations will help me to share the world with the students.

Showing the students a picture on the document camera that they can relate to or talk about will help them improve their English. It also will help the students to make the connection with the material they are learning to the real world. I can find new resources to use, and present to the students. The donations will change my students' lives. They will be able to see, learn and explore different concepts they are learning.
