My students are in the far Northern, very rural area of the United States. They have relied on the school and the activities provided there for most of their contact with friends and community. Covid 19 has taken that away from them for the time being.
We have books to send home, on line learning opportunities for the students with internet service, and hard copies of assignments that go home on the school bus with the meal that are delivered but not a single magazine to offer to them.
These magazines will be used by teachers to create mini-lessons for the students and in some cases they may be checked out by students to do current event articles. Student/teacher discussion groups will be formed to evaluate and review the articles. These groups will be educational and allow the students to see and talk to each other at the same time easing some of the stress of long distance learning. These students want to learn, create and explore new, current trends, and connect with what is going on in the world and each other.
My Project
As we continue to teach our children long distance, we continue to supply books from our library as requested. At this time we have no magazine subscriptions so there are no magazines to send home to students to read. The magazines I have selected are a combination of magazines that have been popular in our library before cuts were made. Some are about current events in sciences, about gardening which is just now trending because of possible food shortages due to the Covid 19 disruptions. I have even added one on livestock/animal husbandry because we just restarted our Future Farmers of America (FFA) club and have many students just starting out in that new group.
