This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a STC Early Childhood Coordinator I serve 50 children from 0-5. My caseload is majority Spanish speaking and come from migrant or seasonal farm-working backgrounds. I am based at SVS. SSD is a 100% free and reduced district that serves a majority of Hispanic children. For my shopping list, I focused on purchasing Spanish books that are culturally relevant to the children and families I serve. Spanish books tend to be more expensive and harder to come by in rural communities.
I have been able to receive free books from other organizations but very limited in Spanish.
Most of my parents/caregivers speak Spanish and do not read or speak English. By getting Spanish books, I will be encouraging families to read together and build each other’s literacy in both languages. The books selected are also culturally relevant to the community I serve, and children/families can see themselves in the literature and context.
To implement this program children and families need access to materials and resources such as Spanish books and other pre-K materials. Here is an example of how we use the materials: I can use these books in multiple ways. When students have access to Spanish materials, it builds pride, confidence, and loss of language as often time Spanish materials are very limited and hard to come by. By increasing Spanish materials, we are reinforcing their foundational language and keeping the child’s culture at the center. I often hear parents that want to read to their child/children but cannot due to only having English books. These books will allow for families to engage in culturally responsive and inclusive environments during home visits and play groups.
