My students need supplemental, non-fiction and fiction reading material that will be interesting, engaging, and will create a deeper understanding of the concepts being taught.
Our school is in Hampstead, North Carolina. Our school services students from Pre-K through 5th grade. We are experiencing tremendous growth and resources are limited.
My group of students will be a mixed ability group with many different interests and backgrounds.
They love to learn and take on new adventures.
This year I am thrilled to be returning to third grade, where I will teach all subjects. Third grade is an amazing year where students learn to become independent and become responsible learners.
Last year, I completely transformed my classroom into a flexible seating environment. My students absolutely thrived in this environment. It helped teach them how to make responsible choices and to take accountability for their learning. Moving to a flexible seating environment was one of the best decisions that I have made as an educator. This year I plan to continue to teach my students to make responsible choices and create a wonderful community environment in my classroom.
My Project
My students need good quality texts to add to our lessons. I think that it is extremely important to have quality texts that meet our standards in the hands of the students. The texts that I have chosen are completely aligned with our standards.
These texts are engaging, interesting, and would be a great addition to our daily lessons.
They are a great mixture of fiction and nonfiction and allow for great follow-up discussion. As much as I love digital resources, I think it is still extremely important to have actual texts in the hands of our students.
Having used these resources in the past, I have seen true growth and a better understanding of material when these are used as a supplemental resource. The Studies Weekly (Science and Social Studies) tie directly into what the students are learning about in Science and Social Studies. It gives background information and helps students understand new vocabulary. Scholastic News is a great resource that gives factual information about current events that are happening. This is a great non-fiction text that students can use to practice finding details in the text. I love to use the Scholastic News as one of the students' independent tasks during their Daily 5 rounds. Storyworks and Storyworks Jr. would be used in my guided reading groups. These both include different genres such as plays, poems, personal narratives, etc. They allow for great discussion and a good way to practice vocabulary and comprehension skills.
