I am currently a first grade teacher at a Title I school in North Carolina. This is only my third year teaching, but I have learned many things from my first 2 years. Reading is one of the most difficult things for teachers to teach and students to learn. Not every child learns at the same rate. It is the teacher's job to make sure that she is teaching to EVERY level in her classroom. This is very hard. Many times you do not have the materials to reach every child; you just get the materials to teach the children who are supposed to be on that level! I am a first grade teacher, so I get books on a first grade level, yet I have students on both kindergarten and second grade levels. I want each child to reach his/her full potential. To do this, I need to create learning centers for each and every level. The school does not supply materials for me to do this. I would love to have different literacy activities to put in my centers that would not only reach my lower children but also my higher ones. My students spend at least 40 minutes a day doing literacy center activities that cover the domains of spelling, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. I would love to have materials that will help reinforce what I am teaching in class and keep them interested.
