This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
It has been a pivotal year, especially for our older students, and I want them to realize that they are a part of something bigger. As a sixth grade teacher, fostering a love of reading was already a challenge, and with COVID keeping students out of my classroom, I have had a hard time showing all students how incredible reading can be. My project aims to make students feel comfortable, first and foremost, while they are reading. I already have a thriving classroom library, but no flexible and comfortable seating for my three sixth grade classes that come see me every day. I would love to be able to allow students to sit on the floor instead of their desks while we are reading our class books.
Some of our classroom books include the classics, like The Giver and Number the Stars, but we also dive into newer or non-traditional books like Ghost, Out of My Mind, and The Outsiders.
It is fascinating to see students realize that reading is not just purely academic, but can be used to connect with the outside world.
