Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Literary analysis the sure fire way to take an interesting book and make it dreary. But it doesn't always have to be like that.

My AP English Literature students are an inspiration.

They have opted to take one of the most challenging classes offered at the school both as a way of bolstering their academic resumes and as a way of getting new skills. Our school and district, though, are not as supportive of their aspirations. They enter my college-level class without the literary experiences necessary to help them be successful.

My Project

This book is a perfect bridge for my ambitious students. Tom Foster, the author, writes about symbols and archetypes that are in common literature and helps decode what they might mean. He provides a framework to deal with symbols like journeys, meals, weather. He untangles literary allusions to Shakespeare, mythology, the Bible. Most importantly, he does so in a chatty and accessible way that my students can understand.

This book will help provide a longer-term framework for understanding how to read challenging texts.

It is by no means the answer to an achievement gap, but it gives all of my students a common vocabulary, a common jumping-off-point to discuss literature.
