My Students

Have you every seen the lights come on in a child's eyes when they have finally been hooked by a book? As a teacher, I witnessed this last year when using the Rick Riordan series. Can you imagine a teacher saying, "Stop reading, close that book, it's time for math!" It was a thrill and I loved it.

My students are fourth graders who attend a small rural school.

They are willing to please the teacher and are diligent in their educational studies. A large percentage of our students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. Many of them come from an agricultural background. Our school actually consists of four small communities consolidated together. Several of my students have a very sheltered background. Many have never traveled outside of their county or the state of Oklahoma. With our school being so small, the library is limited in meeting the literary needs of my students.

My Project

The goal that I have set for my students includes them becoming life long learners and readers. Reading is an excellent way for students to be able to broaden their horizons and acquire the needed background knowledge. This background knowledge can be gained through the reading process. Varying the types of literature strengthens students' vocabulary, comprehension, and interest levels.

Students need to a variety of literature in their classroom library.

This selection of books will enhance vocabulary and cause critical thinking skills to develop. These books will not only build vocabulary and comprehension, but also instill the responsibility of showing respect to another students' perspective.
