My Students

My students are absolutely amazing! I have students that come from 12 different countries and speak 7 different languages. Therefore, 90% of my students begin school with no or little English. Within 4 months, most of them are speaking English in complete sentences. Watching them acquire the English language is what wakes me up in the morning and drives me to be a better teacher than the day before. Since many of my students are new arrivals to the United States of America, I can’t imagine the type of cultural shock they must go through. Here they come to a school that doesn’t look anything like the schools in their countries, the people in the school do not speak their languages or look like them. Their bravery, perseverance and love of learning is the recipe of their success.

My Project

My students will receive 8 books a month delivered to their home. The guided reading books will be used in a small group environment. My students will engage in guided reading instruction that will focus on learning reading strategies, word work activities and comprehension skills. Instead of looking at a computer screen to read books, my students will have a hands on experience. They will be able to make them their own. My students will feel successful by being able to read their books to family and friends anytime and anywhere they want.
