I teach at a wonderful, small school with a tight-knit community in Brooklyn. My third grade students LOVE to read. They smile and cheer when it is independent reading time, they beg to read aloud during lessons, and they love bringing home new books to read and enjoy. They are so passionate about learning, and work so hard to become the best readers they can be. This past school year, my students were reading anytime and anywhere they could and looked forward to our daily independent reading period. By June, many of my students had their noses deep in chapter books while walking- they did not want to ever put their books down. My students see reading as an important part of their daily lives. I want to make sure that this desire to read and learn never dims. My students are so special to me and I will do anything I can to make sure that new and enriching book titles are always accessible to them.
My Project
My students love to read independently so much that they often read through all of the books available in their designated independent reading level bin. Every week, my students book shop for about 4-5 leveled books that appeal to them to read independently at school and at home. Too many times have I seen empty bins in the library, in particular when many students are reading at the same independent reading level. I do not want my students to fear running out of books to read. I want them to know there will always be new “just right” books for them to read, take home, and explore. A new bookshelf will enhance our beloved reading area. It will be a place to display our bins proudly with new books inside, waiting for my third graders to excitedly flip through the pages.
