My students need a variety of leveled books to engage them with choice reading. This will help build their reading fluency to become great readers. They also need resources to help build oral language development.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students are English Language Learners. They are beginner readers and struggle with oral language development. A collection of books at varying levels of reading along with other materials will give them an opportunity to become great readers and confident speakers. Our campus serves over 500 pre-kindergarten students. Seventy percent of our campus families are living in poverty. Most of our students feel being at school is the best and most loving part of their day.

These children have beautiful, bright minds eagerly ready to soak up all the knowledge they could obtain from the vast topics and levels to read from.

Providing them leveled choice books will create an opportunity for them to engage in quality reading. Worthy and McKool (1996) found that "allowing students to make choices about their reading material increased the likelihood that they would engage more in reading." Our goal is to help students build a solid foundation for reading and speaking. This will also build confidence in themselves and their ability to succeed in learning in the classroom. Your help will put these children one step closer to becoming successful readers.

My Project

Your donation will give these precious students an incredible opportunity to learn how to read and build oral language skills. They will be motivated to read by the choice of different leveled reading books. They will be able to build reading stamina and will be confident when they move on to their kindergarten classrooms. Offering a variety of reading materials and resources is vital to academic growth. These children will have an opportunity to become confident speakers and strong readers.

Many of my students come from homes where education is not valued.

This is our chance to help build a solid foundation of education for them so they may become life long learners. In addition, "Guthrie and Wigfield (2000) suggest that providing genuine student choices increases effort and commitment to reading."
