My Students
I am a new teacher at L. Middle School. I have not met my students yet, but I am extremely excited to start this new journey. The students that I will be teaching are from a very small town in South Louisiana. Most of their families are very humble and sincere people, and most of them know each other well. They take a lot of pride in their close-knit community including the education system, which shows in the school's test scores and overall performance. The school is very small, with approximately 350 kids total. There is one teacher per subject per grade, so I will be teaching every student to come through 8th grade.
My Project
I am in need of some novels for my classroom. We are switching the ELA curriculum, and due to lack of funding, we are unable to get the novels required for my students. I would like to request a classroom set of the book Monster. I really want to incorporate this reading into my lessons this year, not only because it is a great book with numerous valuable lessons, but because it is an opportunity for my students to read a high-interest novel independently and hopefully learn to love to read. We have several things that we will be reading this year as a class, but I feel like the importance of them reading and comprehending on their own is just as vital for success in ELA.
