Reading is fundamental and teaching a lifelong love for reading is the most important gift a teacher can give a student!!! There are various ways that reading can be taught to students and various ways to get students excited about books. In my classroom, we have an independent learning time that allows me to work with small groups or individuals in reading. One of the independent work centers that I envision for this time of the day is a "Listening Post" where students can listen to good literature, hear how stories are read with expression, and have a good time with a book and a friend. This center is especially beneficial to students who are struggling readers and often shy away from books. This takes the pressure off of them to read a book independently, but at the same time, it promotes reading. To make this vision come true, I am requesting a radio or tape player that is headphone accessible and 2-4 grade level books on tape or CD for my students to utilize during this time. All students in my classroom will participate in the "Listening Post" center, as all students (struggling readers or high readers) can benefit from the enjoyment of reading. It is essential to help students love reading and enjoy literature. Thank you!
