My Project

My students are unique in so many ways. They each bring a talent to the table when learning and meeting their needs sometimes requires a unique approach to academics so that success is achieved. Graphic novels and lower grade level reading books are powerful tools that can help these students accomplish academic goals while also fostering a genuine love for reading.

Special education high school students often benefit from differentiated instructional materials that meet their unique learning needs.

Graphic novels provide visual context that supports reading comprehension. The combination of images and text helps students make connections, infer meaning, and understand story structure more easily than with text-only books. For struggling readers, these visual supports reduce frustration and make it easier to follow the plot and understand character development. Using lower grade level books allows students to encounter age-appropriate themes in accessible language, promoting vocabulary acquisition. By reading books that are written below their grade level but still relevant to their interests and experiences, students can build confidence and develop a stronger foundation in language skills. As their vocabulary grows, they are better able to understand new texts and express themselves more clearly.

Both graphic novels and lower-level texts can serve as models for writing. Students can analyze how authors use dialogue, description, and structure, then apply these techniques in their own creative or academic writing. Teachers can use these materials to inspire writing assignments such as character diaries, comic strip creation, or alternative endings. Most importantly, these formats make reading more enjoyable. When students feel successful and engaged, they are more likely to continue reading voluntarily. This increased motivation contributes to long-term academic growth and a lifelong appreciation for literature.
