This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is nothing more magical than to see a child's face light up the very first time they read a word on their own. They will read it to anyone that will hear. They will walk around with eyes open wide as they take in letters, convert them into sounds, and produce words.
My classroom is composed of twenty-four highly motivated children.
Many of them do not have books at home or access to books since the city library is closed for renovations and their parents can not afford to continually buy books. A third of them are English Language Learners.
My Project
The leveled library will provide my students with appropriate books for their reading level and as their reading abilities increase the leveled library will continue to challenge them as they move up in levels. In addition, these books will help them develop and strengthen comprehension skills and strategies that help them derive meaning from what they are reading.
There is a vast amount of research that states the dangers of not being able to read fluently.
One such statistic states that "nearly 2/3 of students who reach the fourth grade without proficient reading skills end up on welfare or in prison." However, research also states that "students who read widely and frequently are higher achievers than students who read rarely and narrowly." Through your funding you will not only be proving books, but you will help students soar to new heights.
