Reading is Powerful. We Hunger for Hunger Games!

Help me give my students a novel of their choice to read. It is a challenge to get middle schoolers to read. My eighth graders are requesting the first Hunger Games novel to read as our next novel.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help me give my students a novel of their choice to read as our end-of-the-year chapter book. I am working with current and contemporary novels for YA readers. As an English teacher, I understand the struggle of having students read as well as getting them to enjoy it. Over the course of the year, my students have come to enjoy the dystopian short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. They have now become interested in reading a dystopian novel. I would like to encourage and support their love for reading by obtaining The Hunger Games novel. We simply don’t have enough books for every student in the 8th-grade class. Also, my school doesn't always have the money to buy full-class sets so that we can all read together. The Hunger Games is a beautiful book about the dangers of government oppression and the need for rebellion. The Hunger Games is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia called Panem. A dystopia is an imagined world that is far worse than our own, as opposed to a utopia, which is an ideal place or state.

I think this book rings true in our current times as much as ever.

We will discuss how the government seeks to control its citizens and the methods it often uses. This book would be an excellent tool to achieve that goal.
