This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 6th, 7th and 8th-grade students in the Mandarin DL program desire to excel in Mandarin in an immersive environment. According to the research, academic levels of children educated in a dual language immersion program often surpass those of children educated in English only.
My students live in a low-income high poverty area and they are eager to read, write, and learn Mandarin!
In the dual language program, students have more exposure to the target language and understand Chinese culture and the people. Thus, they are getting ready to better opportunities in a globalized world where the USA and China will continue to be major players. My students attend a school funded through Title I, and yet many of my students aspire to learn a second language. As technology continues to take over a big part of their daily lives, I want to make sure that students are able to grow academically and independently.
My Project
I want to continue to instill the love of reading for my students. To do that, I want to give my students access to a variety of diverse Mandarin books that they can relate to. With these books, my students will be able to read not just about kids like them but about other kids from different backgrounds and countries. Having access to these diverse sets of books will give my students the opportunity to gain a better perspective of themselves and others. These books will make our classroom and library a more inclusive space for everyone learning Mandarin.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of Mandarin books that will open the door to a variety of people and backgrounds.
Providing this diverse, print rich environment will help my students learn Mandarin through engaging texts. It will encourage them to pick up a book.
