Help me give my students high interest books like prize winning TOON books and graphic novels to engage them as readers and show them that reading is fun!
We are in a small rural school in Virginia with over 50% of students that qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students all have individual education plans and are diagnosed with different disabilities. All of my students have reading disabilities and already by 2nd grade they feel differently about their abilities and try to avoid reading.
My students think reading is a chore that you do in school with a book that is very simplistic and not interesting.
They complain that other students get to read chapter books and they can not. Also, many of my students do not have access to books at home and do not have role models that show them a love of reading! I want to open up the magical world of reading for these students.
I have made a superhero reading nook in my classroom. I tell my students that reading is their superpower! Now I want to provide high interest, low level books for them to chose to read for pleasure in the book nook!
My Project
Students want to read about superheros! They want to have new books that are fun and engaging! It is difficult to find books that are fun and on an appropriate level. I want to provide superhero and graphic novel books for my students to read for pleasure at school (in their superhero nook) and at home.

When funded, my students will read books about Ninja turtles, Batman, Wonder Woman and Cat Woman! They will have graphic novels that they can read and enjoy. I expect that they will be excited to make reading their super power!
