My students need books at their just right level using Early Reader Book Sets and Pre-Reading Non-Fiction Books, so I can foster my students' love of reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my elementary school come from diverse backgrounds and lower levels of the socio-economic groups. We are a Title I school in California where over 75% of the students receive free lunch. I teach in a general ed class of kinder and 1st-grade students, with some of them being students with special needs. Our school population is about 450 students, with limited school funding. Students here have a great attendance rate and come to school, eager to learn. They have hardships at home but come to school where it is safe and engaging.
As the great Dr. Seuss once said, "The more that you read, the more things that you'll know; the more you learn, the more places you'll go." Teachers shape young minds and help foster the love of learning.
Reading is so important to develop skills across every subject.
My Project
All students come to school wanting to learn to read. Reading is magical and takes you on a journey as you turn the pages. Students need books to read books that are at their level so their interest in reading doesn't fizzle out.
With the books that I've selected, students will be able to choose books at their level and allow them to read independently.
This will reduce their frustration level and continue to grow these young individuals into life-long learners.
These leveled reading books will enhance our print-rich classroom and will be a great addition to our small classroom library. Students will have access to just-right books which are difficult to find for beginning readers at our local library.
More than half of students from low‑income households
