This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have had the privilege of working with some amazing, bright, diverse, and talented individuals this year. As we came back into the classroom, each student brought with them their personality and we began to find a new routine together. The year is starting to wind down and we are getting ready to enter my favorite unit: independent reading! While we will have a main book to hold us as a class together, the majority of this last quarter is spent with students diving into their own books and discovering the joys of reading! While I pride myself on having a great classroom library and many options for students, I also know that there is so much more room for growth. This is why we need some more books!

Having books that students can access and relate to is imperative for student engagement!

When we review skills as a class, they will spend time in their own book immersing themselves in stories and showing what they've learned this year. If students don't have books that peak their interest or at their reading levels, I cannot expect them to be successful. When surveying my students, these are the types of books that they wanted to see more of! Short stories, graphic novels, and thrillers! As well as some replacement books to fill in the gaps we've made along the way. I have a group of amazing students that deserve to have books that interest them so they can be successful in class (and a few jolly ranchers to enjoy along the way of our journey). I know that with these new materials, we will have a fantastic end of the year!
