My students are such talented 2nd grade members of their communities with inquisitive minds and a willingness to grow! They're predominantly from the Park Heights community of Baltimore City. My students are in an inclusion setting, with general education and special education needs served all in one classroom community. They work in whole group, small group, and independent modalities of learning for both reading and math. They become EXPERTS in setting and assessing long term goals, and value their growth over time. They are capable of anything they put their minds and their grit to! My goal for them is to learn how to use their talents to change the world!
Studies have shown that students that enjoy reading become more successful in school. One of our school's major initiative for the year is to foster that joy every day! Currently, my students have 15 minutes of uninterrupted independent reading every day. With a class set of flashlights and assorted plush items, we can maximize on this time by making reading even more fun!
With the items in this project, students can get cozy and absorbed in what they're reading!
Students will be able to read to a stuffed Goucher College Gopher, or lay back with a book on a University of Delaware blanket! Students will be able to read their favorite books with the lights off, read to each other under blankets, and put a spotlight on their favorite page. This will enrich their reading experience and solidify a culture of reading that is joyful and exciting!
