Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This request is being made for the after-school program at my school. A typical day in this after-school program consists of students receiving help with homework. It also provides enrichment in the subjects and skills taught in their general education classroom.
I am a fourth grade teacher and I help out after class in the after-school program.
The program consists of roughly 100 fourth and fifth grade students. The majority of the students in the program are from low-income families who do not have the luxury of obtaining new books. Any extra time allotted is ideally used for improving reading skills. Some new, fun books will help to get the students eager to read.
My Project
Any extra time allotted in the after-school program is ideally used for improving reading skills. I am asking for 5 high-interest series like Cam Jansen and a set of emergent reader books that cover a range of levels. Some new, fun books will help to get the students eager to read. Additionally, these books will help students to complete their homework while at the program as part of their homework is 30 minutes of nightly reading. Lower-level students will be able to heighten their reading abilities with one-on-one tutoring that is sometimes available in the program. Books are the only tools and materials needed for this!
The funding of this project will help improve the literacy of our students.
It will impact about 100 students each year, as the books will stay with the after-school program from year to year. Providing the students with enjoyable reading material that sparks their interest for reading is something that will help to improve their literacy as well as their love of learning.
