My Students

Do you remember when you were in elementary school and you fell in love with a book that you were reading and couldn't put it down? Mom would catch you reading instead of sleeping so that you would be well rested for school. This is the type of memory that I yearn for my students to have!

I have the pleasure of educating 32 fifth grade inner city public school students.

My students are very active and are eager to learn. The books that are currently in my classroom library are the same books that the students had access to last school year. Because of this, I am in dire need of new reading material. Our school uses the Accelerated Reader program to assess students' reading comprehension skills once they've completed the book of their choosing. I hate to see the students thumbing through the books, looking for a book that they haven't read when selecting a new book for the week. We allow students to share books they enjoy reading on the "Thumbs Up" bulletin board. They right summaries of favorite books which are posted along with a snapshot of the student and the cover of the book that they are recommending. New books will provide additional opportunities for more reviews.

My Project

I would like to have available for my students books across various genres. To be successful at high stakes tests, students must be exposed to various genres and be able to identify the genres. At our school we have 2 - 30min "Drop Everything and Read" periods weekly. I would love for my students to have access to new and interesting library books that are not only across genres but at their varying grade levels as well.

Reading is essential for success in life.

Students have to be able to read and comprehend what they are reading. Books expose children to different experiences; experiences that they might not have the opportunity of experiencing if it wasn't for reading materials. Please help me to open up doors for success for my students!!!
