My students need access to a variety of literature, classics and reading materials in order to perform well in state exams and develop a love for reading.
My school is a predominately low-income school in the Bronx, NY. In addition to my monolingual students, we've had an influx of English Language Learners from Hispanic and African countries. All of my students have 1 thing in common though: they are warriors. In addition to being low-income, many are foster children, and some live in shelters.
Although we've created a nurturing, safe and professional environment to help our scholars achieve educational, social and emotional stability, we need resources.
We need a library to help increase reading scores, help ELLs assimilate to a new culture, while developing a love for reading. Books can do this by transporting students to places and sparking their imaginations.
My students all read at different levels so my goal is to have a broad spectrum of books and magazines to meet their individual needs. By exposing them to quality literature and interesting informational selections I hope to instill in all my students the love of lifelong reading and learning.
My Project
The few books we have are ripped, written in, and do not prepare our students to ante up their education. These selections will enhance literacy instruction and help my ELLs with their speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing. I anticipate a classroom library where my students will not only read independently, but also at their leisure! All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I always assess my students' reading levels in September, and by receiving these donations, I envision my students choosing books or magazines that are current and that will actually help them academically.
One more thing that just enthuse me is that my students will actually be able to choose books that intrigues them.
Reading is fundamental, and by having access to interesting books, my students will develop into stronger readers. My students have worked quite hard their first year in this country, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
