Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I wouldn't choose any other place in the world to teach except in my current school district! My school services many diverse students and over half our student population is bilingual. We are located in a quiet neighborhood with a rich Hispanic culture. It is, however, in a low income part of the city so lots of our students benefit from school resources like free breakfast/lunch, extended after school hours, community food pantry once a month and a school closet of clothes and other care products for students in need. Being a part of such a community is a very rewarding experience every day.
I have the honor and privilege of teaching children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who range in age from seven to ten years old.
My students possess a great deal of ability. Ranging from students with autism to down syndrome, it's not my students' labels that make them extraordinary. As a teacher, I look at my students for their awesome abilities and talents, like the ten years old who can build a replica of the Titanic out of construction paper, or the young man who discovered tap dancing.
My Project
It's been a few years since my students got comfortable seating for our classroom. As students with special needs, they have unique learning needs and spend a lot of time on the floor stretching out and taking breaks as well as playing and learning. Our reading pillows and bean bags have stains, rips, and tears and need replacing. We could also use some fun throw pillows to rest on. I am also asking for new chapter books as they love being read to and with the use of the pocket chart and laminating sheets, I can create pictures to help with the novels and their memorizing of the important information. I am also requesting new easy readers at various levels so my students can continue their independent reading. The vinyl figures are requested to finish a collection in our classroom of memorable characters that create a visual character alphabet! These supplies will create a new reading space in our classroom that will allow our imaginations to take us away!
