This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my sixth grade students read below grade level, so I routinely assign them home reading tasks. I can measure their reading levels and track their home reading using a website called "Renaissance Place" which is generally used by 1st through 5th graders.
The children in my class read below grade level for one overriding reason.
English is their second language. They live in an area where over 3/4 of the inhabitants speak Spanish as a first language. Without a home grounding in English, my students have difficulties in understanding their textbooks. I need to foster their reading skills.
My Project
Renaissance Place will gauge my students' reading levels, recommend books that they should read, and then test their comprehension of the books. I want my 6th graders to be able to take advantage of this web service. To do that, I need to request an add-on subscription to "Renaissance Plaza." How will the web service impact my students? I will be able to set my children individualized reading goals and motivate them to read more, both at school and - most importantly! - at home. The motivation? Students who meet their reading goals will participate in monthly picnics. (That is feasible because our school is in Florida!) We hold the picnics in the school grounds and, of course, round them off with ice cream.
Reading is fundamental.
If they cannot fully comprehend their textbooks, my students will be in big trouble. Renaissance Place offers me a structured, proven way to measure and promote reading skills. Most important, the individualized reading goals provide students with a challenge. Renaissance Place motivates reluctant readers. Please help me offer this resource to my students!
