This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." - Mason Cooley.
I teach 16 amazing children at a culturally and economically diverse school.
Seventy-two percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. In my classroom I have students from many cultures, including two non-English speaking students. Our students come to school eager to learn and work in the classroom. Like most schools with high poverty rates, my students experience a safe, learning environment with the security to explore the world abroad through books, discussion, and computers. However, at home, most students do not have access to computers or the Internet. Most of my students have limited experiences beyond their own neighborhoods due to financial limitations. Often their families are unable to take them to the local library or purchase books to read at home.
My Project
I am requesting these chapter books and the white board easel to help my students grow as readers. Every day we spend one hour working in small groups to focus on specific skills to build comprehension and fluency. The books will be a great resource for guided reading instruction. The easel will also be helpful for our small group lessons to allow us to write our thoughts and demonstrate skills.
Adding the easel and chapter books will help my students grow as readers.
In second grade children transition from reading picture books to reading early chapter books. They begin to learn how to rely on the pictures less and the words more in chapter books. These resources will give my students more opportunity to build these skills.
