This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
These books will be a great asset to our literacy program! They will be used for teaching important reading skills and strategies while holding student interest and promoting diversity. Over a third of my students are English language learners with Spanish or Vietnamese as their primary language.
The characters in these books reflect the cultures and ethnicities of many of my first graders.
Culturally relevant books will allow my students to connect with real-life characters relatable to their own life and experiences. My students need books with topics that spark their interest and instill a love of reading. By introducing different authors and genres, I can help my students discover new ideas, topics, and interests. Literacy is the key to success! The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. These books will be used during the upcoming holidays and will be used for writing practices. My first grade students are learning to use the 5 finger retell strategy to retell a story and put that into writing. These books are a fun and engaging way to teach these standards.
