This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day.
This is my class as well.
Being a kindergarten teacher, you quickly realize that many of your students are in school for the first time! We take for granted all the things they need to learn (letters, numbers, how to write a number and how to write their names). More supplies, in all aspects of learning, would definitely help my class learn and help with their foundation that is so crucial to the rest of their school careers.
My Project
My project will help my students love reading. First, are books and activities to go along with the books. This will motivate them while reading and help them learn strategies so they can eventually read independently on grade level. Next, the word family readers will go along with the big books I have in my classroom. I can use this during shared reading to model reading strategies and then students can go off with their reading partners to implement the strategies when reading the smaller books. I will use the tape during shared reading and small groups to highlight any words, word families or letters I want the students to pay attention to and then they can do this on their own as a class or in small groups. The last item is for classroom management. If students aren't staying focused or behaving then they will not learn or stay engaged. This behavior management system is a good visual for the students so they can monitor their own behavior and be aware of it as well.
