Reading is Fun When It Involves Plays!

My students need copies of plays ("The BFG: A Set of Plays" and "Novio Boy") and a book about writing plays to increase their ability to understand what they read and understand dramatic structure.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Tarr's classroom raised $470

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“A capacity and taste for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others.”~Abraham Lincoln. My students can get that taste for reading with some funny and engrossing plays while learning about dramatic structure at the same time.

Do you see a movie in your mind when you read?

Visualizing is,for most,an intrinsic part of the reading process, but for the English Language Learners in my classroom this isn't the case. I teach middle school Theatre Arts for "at risk" students in an underserved community. Many of the students in my classroom struggle with reading. They can pronounce the words when they read, but they don't necessarily make sense of the text. For them reading is just a bunch of black symbols on a white page. This is a fundamental reading problem that is normally addressed in earlier grades. However, when students get to middle school and they can't read, they tend to give up, become apathetic about their school work, and then drop out. The high school next door, where most of my students will go,has a 50% dropout rate. According to research, it's estimated that dropouts cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars a year in lost income taxes and increased welfare and healthcare costs.

My Project

These plays will help my students visualize as they read because they are in dialogue format and can be acted out in class. It will also help them to study and understand dramatic structure which will prepare them for more challenging reading in the future. We need 35 copies of Novio Boy to combine with a few copies that we already have to create a classroom set for my students to enjoy. Novio Boy is a funny play about a boy trying to win over a girl. The Ronald Dahl plays are a great collection of shorter scripts that will capture students' imagination in only the way that Ronald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach can. The Action! book will help my students to write their own plays after learning about dramatic structure from the examples that they will be able to read in class. All of this will help them to increase their reading and writing skills and prepare them for the challenges that await them in high school.

Your donation will ensure that my struggling readers become enthusiastic readers.

It will help my students to have the skills they need by allowing them to make sense of the texts they read through visualization. This in turn will help them to stay in school and help close the achievement gap. Your donation can help to prevent them from becoming one less drop out at the high school next door and give them a more hopeful future.
