Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diverse kids from different countries from all over Latin America. Our school is located in a low-income area in Houston, Texas and over 90% of the school's population is economically disadvantaged. Many of my students come to school hungry and tired on a daily basis. This is in part due to the fact that most of these kids only get one meal per day. This meal is usually received at school. When they go back home, food is scarce. As a result, our students come to school with very low energy almost daily.
Despite all of these challenges, I want to be able to provide something that will make their days much more bright and adventurous.
My Project
My students are at the beginning stage of reading. They read on a daily basis in our school. They get around 30 mins per day to read, and they have many books available to them at school to read. They can also check out books at the school library and take it home if they like to; however, many of students forget to bring the book back to school or end up losing them. This, in return, makes them unable to check out other books.
My students have gone through a very traumatic year, specially with the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey early in the school year.
With these books, they will be practicing their reading fluency and they will also practice how to summarize. Each day, they will be require to write three to four sentences explaining what the book is about.
