I teach ESOL students who come from all over the world. What I love about them is that even though they’re from many different countries and cultures, they are all still very similar. They are silly, dramatic, loud, smart, and curious. Often they are tired because they work so much outside of school. They love music, dancing and soccer! Most of all, they all want the same thing - to have a good life in the United States and a better life in the future.
All of my students have had an immigrant experience. Some have come here by choice, and some have fled their homelands. While they are not all refugees, they have all had to deal with leaving their countries, moving to the United States, and learning how to navigate the changes of living here. The book “Refugee” ties into the content they will be studying in World History 2 this year, and it is also a great story of perseverance, strength, and love. Since many of my students do not have books outside of the classroom, having a personal copy of this book to read in class and at home would help them immensely.
