My Students
I have 20 amazing students in grades 5-8 who are brand new to the United States who are learning English. They come from 9 countries and speak 13 languages. Some are refugees who have never been to school before, and some are immigrants who have been educated in their own countries. All the students are on free lunch and come from low-income families. My school is considered 90% poverty.
Even though many of my students have gone through terrible hardships to come to the United States, the students are filled with smiles and excitement for learning and coming to school everyday.
They recognize that their parents sacrificed a great deal for them to get an education in the United States and they are willing to work hard and put in the work.
My Project
Newcomer students to the United States need to work twice as hard as their peers to catch up to the reading level of their middle school peers. My students read anywhere from a kindergarten to second grade reading level, and therefore need to be reading every night to improve their reading skills.
Currently, each student has a zip lock bag to hold their at home reading book, but these are often ripping and not always making it back to the classroom.
By ordering these take home book bags, both the students and myself would be able to keep better track of what they are reading.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
