I am so blessed to be a teacher. My students teach me so much.
One word that I am constantly hearing from many of them is how much they dislike reading.
Many of them are English Language learners, and they struggle with reading and writing in English fluently, as well as performing on grade level as opposed to native speakers.
The demographic of my school is largely Asian and many of them are the first or second generation of their family to be in the United States. Approximately 80 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The cultural make up of our school is a blessing and we all do learn very much from each other.
My Project
Nancy Atwell is known for her work in the area of Readers and Writers workshop. Every year I struggle with the phrase "I hate to read" that comes from many of my students. I don't believe they hate to read, I believe that they need to have good titles to read that are recommended from their peers.
I am bound and determined this year to help students reach their greatest potential as readers and writers, and in order to do this, I need a classroom library that entices them to read.
All of these novels come highly recommended from adolescents. Students will be able to select books that they are interested in and will then be able to finish many novels throughout the school year. Reading and writing go hand in hand, so once the students read, they will also reflect and write about the things they have learned from reading these novels. Student choice is a big deal to middle school students, and I hope these titles will enable them to grow as readers and build their confidence so that they can continue to be life long learners, and be better readers and writers.
