My Students

My students are in an urban setting and choose to attend our school rather than face the chaos and potential violence of the inner-city public schools. Many of my students have experienced bullying, disruptive home lives, and learning environments that did not support their developing minds and individual needs.

In this classroom, my students are a community of learners.

We support one another and we work together to achieve our goals! My students can be tough to engage at times, so learning must be fun and inviting.

For the 2020-2021 school year, I will be teaching fourth and fifth grade in the classroom. Some of my students will be at school 5 days a week while others will attend 2 days a week in person and 3 days a week virtually. Due to social distancing and safety protocols in our building, I will be striving to provide my students engaging and hands-on learning in unique ways that allow them to explore independently.

My Project

The students in my 4/5 grade class read at wildly different levels. I have been struggling to find books that my struggling readers will enjoy reading independently. I want them to feel independent and empowered by choosing a book and reading it on their own. High quality picture books and Step Into Reading books are favorites, as they teach all of the grade level standards while also being great independent reading sources for my scholars. Additionally, classic novels are what my higher ability readers gravitate towards so I would like to stock our classroom library with some of those as well.
