My Students

Every teacher is a reading teacher. Our low-income students are so behind when it comes to literacy skills, we have to be teaching them to read all the time. But how can we teach them to read, when we have to teach math, science, and art too? Scholastic magazines, that's how!

Our students come from low-income families with working parents.

For various reasons, they come to high school reading at a 4th grade level, not prepared to study the heavy content of chemistry, physics, or algebra. We need to encourage them to read CONSTANTLY - that means across content areas so that we can get them to the appropriate reading levels as soon as possible.

My Project

With Scholastic magazines featuring science, math, and art, our students will be gaining a deeper understanding of each of each content area while building literacy skills. And teachers can avoid hearing, "Why are we reading? This isn't English class!"

Our students are so far behind, we want them to read anything that sparks their interest.

You can help build their literacy skills by giving them as many choices and chances to read as possible.
