My students need lots of great books, especially in Spanish. They clamor for graphic novels and books like National Geographic’s Weird Facts, Bat Pat and Dork Diaries!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our day begins with a morning message welcoming the students to an exciting day and previewing some learning highlights. We might read a great book, like Roald Dahl’s Twits, then transition to write, draw, sculpt, and read about plants and animals that cohabited New York with the Lenape long ago.
Our community worked hard to have a new school built here some 20 years ago and we are very much a product of that hard work and commitment.
Our building is a warm, welcoming environment with clean halls and brightly colored student work on the walls of the classrooms and corridors. Classrooms are filled with students working together, reading intently, doing Social Studies and art projects, playing musical instruments, and solving challenging math problems.
On the street corners nearby, you will find carts selling empanadas, tamales, tacos, mango with lime and chili pepper, and orchata. Many of our students speak Spanish at home and come to our dual language program to learn English and grow academically in Spanish.
Still, money has been a constant challenge; we were written up nearly a decade ago as one of the most underfunded schools in New York City. Since that time, we have faced continued budget cuts, making it difficult to stock our classes with great books and supplies.
My Project
Each day, I set aside about 45 minutes for kids to sink their teeth into a good book. When I have the right books in my library, reading time is magical and the kids look forward to it each day. The right books will tempt some students into the world of reading with magical stories that spark their imaginations. Other kids will push together in pairs and groups to share fascinating facts about places they have never been and animals and natural phenomenon they have never seen.
The more my students read, the more they learn - and even more so when their interest is piqued. My students will improve their skills in reading and they will also learn from the stories and content of their books.
The books you fund will make it possible to stock my English and Spanish libraries and make them so much more inviting.
Students lives will be enriched because they will be able to enjoy books with ease throughout their childhood and adult lives. One day, they will be able to make use of the myriad of documents, contracts, and instructions manuals that will help them to navigate the challenges they will face as adults. Doors will also be opened as they move towards high school and college.
