My students need a classroom set of books to read independently or with the help of my assistant. I will also be reading aloud to them in class. They are ELL students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal for my students is to teach them common everyday survival vocabulary and academic vocabulary so that they can be successful in school and later after they graduate from high school. The more I can stimulate their love for reading- the better they can excel.
I teach at a high that is made up of 95% free or reduced lunch population and we (the HS) just received our very first "A" Grade for Over-performing schools in our district.
I teach non-English speakers and non-readers of English, so it's imperative that they continue to get as much exposure to the English language in the limited time they are with me. I believe instilling a love of learning to read will help them become better writers and speakers of the English language. My classes consist of Iraqi refugees, students from Mexico and a smattering of Asian students. Teaching them how to read, write and carry on a fluid conversation is my desire for them before they leave my classroom. And I push them to leave as soon as possible so that they can obtain the necessary credits to graduate in 4 years.
My Project
Even though I teach at the high school level- my students are performing in language at about a kindergarten or first grade level. My goal is to push them to advance at least three to four grade levels from where they entered. This requires extensive language learning 4 hours a day in English. I teach the Reading component of their day. It's my desire to expose them to Lexile appropriate reading level books along with academic vocabulary to further their education. It's a challenge I enjoy and it's a challenge that is rewarding intrinsically (especially when I see them move ahead in English).
Providing these books is a step in a long journey to acquire the English language.
By making these books available- they have a similar starting point as most English speaking students. They will have access to have a library of books to choose from whenever they have finished their work to read over and over again. Plus, I love to read aloud to my students (it's almost a lost art today). Students enjoy listening to their teachers read to them. My hope is that they develop a love for reading.
