My Students
"In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you." - Mortimer J. Adler.
In my classroom, I want students to be affected by what they read. I do not want them to rush through a book to simply have said they read it.
The students predominantly reside in a low income area.
Many are first generation in this country and many are first generation to finish high school in their families. They are curious students and actively seek to learn in the classroom. They are dedicating and confident in pursuing a higher education. With reading, many students read to get through the text, which is not effective.
If they had their own personal text, the reading level of comprehension for students could be very different.
Our school does not have enough funding to provide students with their own personal copies of the text. At times, even finding enough books to have a class set can be difficult. If students could have their own books, this would not only allow students to read at home, but also allow students to read at their own pace, annotate, highlight text, write questions - they are literally interacting with the text.
My Project
I am requesting 110 copies of "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Students would be provided with their own personal copies of the text. Students will be encouraged to interact with their text. They would be asked to annotate and highlight in their texts, including their thoughts, comments and questions. Not only would this allow students to be able to annotate, but students will be able to take their copies home to complete assignments and revisit reading for better comprehension.
By actively reading with their own individual copies, this will be allowing students to understand, analyze, and comprehend better the plot, characters, symbols, themes, and literary devices.
This will not only prepare students for a project, quiz, or test, but create an active and engaging community where students can discuss their ideas with their peers.
By being provided with their own books, students will truly improve their reading skills and habits, which is a necessary life skill.
