I teach our preschool students receiving special education.
Help our young students with disabilities develop a deeper love of reading and increase their communication skills with books!
The class is blended with children with different types of special needs (Autism, Developmental Delays, fine and gross motor delays, Speech Delay, and other Disorders).
All of the students have some type of language and communication deficits. The students have difficulty understanding language and communicating their wants and needs. We use several augmentative communication devices, sign language to communicate, and picture symbols. The school is a Title 1 school with about 100% of the students on free and reduced price lunch. Most of the parents are single parents, which leaves little money to help with materials needed in the classroom.
My Project
I am requesting books for our special needs Pre-K classroom. These books will allow the students to build their vocabulary as they learn and label pictures/words/objects through books read in the classroom. The non-verbal Pre-K children in our class are not able to use their words. We do use other means of communication in our Special Needs Pre-K classroom such as sign language, picture cards, augmentative communication devices, and picture symbols. These books will also be another resource and help the students with their communication delay. Help me meet the students' needs with the books requested.
Your generous support and donations will allow our Pre-K students the opportunity to increase many of their skills with books.
These books that we are in need of will provide opportunities for growth and learning. Also, these books will have a strong foundation for the students to become more independent and ready for the next level.
