“Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself. You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms.”
- Angela Carter
My students want to become better readers, but have difficulty doing so from lack of materials.
The students in our program are reading significantly below grade level for a variety of reasons.
They want to get better, but often don't know where to begin. Our students come from a low income area and don't have access to reading materials that will help them become better readers. In our program, we try to fill that gap with a wide variety of reading materials in many formats.
The students in our program are also struggling writers. Because they have difficulty reading, they also struggle with writing. The program we teach provides mini writing assignments and review daily. We were lucky to be able to provide many of our students with notebooks at the beginning of the school year, and would like to be able to continue to do so for the remainder of the year as many of our students do not have access to school materials that will help them be successful.
My Project
Our students will use the CD players to listen to audio books that are intended to help the students hear what they are reading. In listening to the audio books, the students are able to receive the information from the text in multiple methods that will help in improving reaching comprehension and fluency skills.
We practice writing skills daily in our class, but many of our students don't have access to basic school materials that set the up for success. The students need notebooks to keep their writing in a safe and secure place, where they can get to it at any time.
We are advocates for rewarding our students for accomplishments made in our classroom. To show the students that we notice and love the accomplishments they have made, we print certificates to post in the room and hallway for positive reinforcement.
This will help the students improve their reading skills by allowing the students to make connects between what they see on the page and what they hear.
The students get to use the materials to help in practicing a variety of reading strategies that also help them to improve their reading skills and abilities daily.
The donation will also give the students one of the most basic schools supplies needed to be successful in their writing class at school: notebooks.
