Reading Instruction Materials That Reach Even the Students Who Struggle

My Students

My class is a group of 14 first graders from a small town in Western Massachusetts. They are typical of most six-year olds, so smart, funny, and full of enthusiasm. I wouldn't want it any other way!

I love teaching this age group because watching them put together all the skills needed to learn how to read is so rewarding.

I find that providing them with great books is a really wonderful way to motivate them and keep them engaged.

My Project

I am so excited about the materials that I have requested in this project. I have been a First Grade teacher for years and have just recently been diving into the world of the "Science of Reading". It is method of teaching all children how to decode words through some very explicit methods of teaching phonics and phonemic awareness. Sounds dull I know which is why for years I eschewed the practice of teaching phonics in favor of surrounding my students with beautiful, quality children's books. The problem is- most kids (if not all) really need the foundational skills that phonics provides. Cue- Flyleaf Publishing! Beautiful and engaging books with the added bonus of targeting specific phonological skills.
