Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach energetic PK-5 students at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. My art studio is a place where creativity is born. Students feel safe and can express themselves by learning new art techniques. My students learn best by providing them with fun and engaging activities that spark their interests and nurtures their prior art knowledge. Our students are in need of essential resources and materials that will benefit their educational growth exploring, planning, creating, and critiquing artistic compositions.
Our school is truly a barrier-free school, serving all students who come through our doors.
Almost 10% of our students are English language learners and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school care until after 5 PM each day while their parents work.
My Project
A well stocked art library should include books on different artists, artistic techniques, art history, principles of design and literature. Currently, my students have a small library they can browse through and reference if they need inspiration or reference ideas, however there are many books that would be useful on an everyday basis and to support lessons. These books will have a home by the window so students can leisurely sit and flip through while enjoying the bright light coming through the windows. To enhance this experience of getting lost in their books, I am requesting a carpet to make the area more comfortable. The additional books and comfy carpeting will provide a supportive nook.
It is my hope that my students will have the opportunity to be exposed to elements of art that will support their creativity.
For some of my students, the art room is their sanctuary where they can express themselves independently and build their confidence.
