This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are amazing young and fun high school students. Several of my freshman student's reading levels vary from beginner readers to third-grade level. Learning science is important but learning to read is essential. The gap is so big that the English class is not enough for my students to catch up. That's why I decided to support the effort to help our students to become better readers by teaching them to read in the content area.

My students need high-interest low-reading level books that we can incorporate into our science curriculum.

I selected sports-related books (Before the Snap, Taking Control, Fighting the Legend, Down and Out). We relate science to their daily lives, such as sports. Students learn what happens to their body cells when they sweat. When we learn physics, students learn about concussions, velocity, speed, and momentum.

Thank you for helping my students improve their reading skills so they can live independently once they graduate high school.
