This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a low-income/high poverty school. My group of students are as unique as they come, each with their own learning style.
One of the things I have noticed is how much they enjoy read alouds.
I will be teaching math to bilingual students this year. These students need a lot of language support. My students are transitioning from 3rd grade 60% English instruction to 4th grade 80% English instruction.
English Language Learners need lots of visuals as one of the strategies to help them learn.
My Project
Reading is fundamental in all subjects, including math. Introducing students to new math concepts is hard. Their interests need to be grasped at the beginning of a lesson. How? One way are books! I will be reading math books related to the concept I will be teaching before a lesson.
Who doesn't love a read aloud?
Engaging students in math using a book as a visual will definitely grab their attention. ELL students need to understand what is being asked in math word problems and a lot of the times they do not grasp the concept unless they see a picture or model.
Engaging students promotes critical understanding of difficult concepts thus helping them become successful.
