My Students
Getting kids to read can be a struggle, but if you create a comfortable environment they will come.
My students attend school in a lower income area of NYC.
They are working on increasing their reading skills. They love to get new books, love to go to the library, and would love somewhere comfortable to read instead of their desks. My school does not have a library so all reading is done in the classroom.
My Project
The bean bag chairs would be utilized during independent reading time in the classroom library. At that time, or any other time they choose to read, they would use these bean bag chairs as a comfortable place to enjoy their books. Sometimes reading at their desks can be uncomfortable and boring (since they sit there all day for all other lessons). These chairs would also be an incentive for them to find that "just right" book that they can get lost in. Being comfortable while reading should be the least of their worries. Four bean bag chairs are just enough to create a little reading area in my classroom library.
Since reading is fundamental, I would like to create a safe, comfortable space that reading can be fun as well.
I would like my students to look forward to reading and I believe creating this reading area with these bean bag chairs will create the best environment for that. My students will soon look forward to reading anything!
