Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a middle school teacher in a Title I charter school, I have the privilege of teaching students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Our school is rich in diversity. A majority of our students speak a second language at home including Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Amharic, and Turkish. Many of my diverse group of students also come from low-income families. Along with their diverse backgrounds, my students also have various learning abilities. Many of my students perform below grade level and are considered "at-risk." In addition, some of these same students are faced with learning disabilities such as dysgraphia, dyslexia, and ADHD.
Although my students come from different backgrounds and abilities, they all share a love of reading and learning.
For many of my students, the transition to 6th grade can be difficult. Students are introduced to higher-level texts and often struggle with reading comprehension and critical thinking. Because of this, many students become discouraged and no longer find reading enjoyable. With your help, my goal is to provide my students with the tools and skills necessary to become avid readers and writers.
My Project
I have loved using Scholastic Action Magazines in my classroom for the past three years and would love to continue using them this next school year. Scholastic Action has become an integral part of our classroom. These magazines have become even more important now that we are distance learning. The digital resources have allowed me to provide my students with engaging texts and activities while we are apart.
With Scholastic Magazines, my students will be able to read short, engaging fiction and nonfiction texts.
All of my students will be able to benefit from a variety of topics, texts, and reading levels that are found in these magazines. Having a choice and reading texts that are interesting will help my students become lifelong readers! Even my reluctant and struggling readers have found success with this amazing resource!
