I am a Media Specialist for Heide Trask HS in rural Pender County, North Carolina. We currently have 51% of our students receiving free lunch and 6.75% are English Limited. Being a poor county, with an increasing population, our funds are extremely limited. In addition, we serve a very diverse social and economic pool of students.
We are continuing a special reading program to introduce Theatrical Reading to all 700 of our students. For nearly a year now we have successfully enticed students to read literary works of fiction that they have already seen on screen. The basis of our Media Program, Reading Hollywood, is the creation of displays that combine the visual appeal of movie posters and the works of literature that the movies are based on.
Students love movies. Our program transfers their love of movies to works of literature after we show them that, “hey, that movie was actually based on a book.” As simple as this tactic may be (displaying a book beside an accompanying movie poster) it has been extremely successful. The books included in our program already have circulated in greater numbers, such as: A Beautiful Mind, I, Robot, Lord of the Rings, Cheaper by the Dozen, The Notebook, Seabiscuit, and Grapes of Wrath.
We hope to continue our program with the addition of two works of literature, War of the Worlds and The Brothers Grimm. Resources required to add these two works of literature to our program include a new book, posters, and display materials. Please help us motivate all of our 700 students to read.
