My Project
I don't have enough space to describe my full passion for student-led reading groups and the benefits that I've seen come from it! I love being able to hear the kids' verbal reading improve over the course of the year and attribute it quite a bit to the reading groups. Being able to let the kids have a say in what they're reading together is amazing, but we have a limited number of options.
In my first year of teaching, I've noticed that for many students, their interest in a book can be the difference between them outright refusing to read and being actually excited to read with their group.
I am thankful to have multiple copies of books available to use; however many of the books we have are outdated, not engaging for the kids, or not in good condition. These books are titles that I have personally heard kids ask about, but don't have enough copies of for a book group.
Reading group time can be tricky because it is a time where many kids are expected to do group work without direct supervision while not at a small-group instruction station. The happier they are with their books, the more on-task they can stay! The books take them several weeks to read, as they are reading almost entirely out-loud to each other. Because many of these books will only end up in a few hands each year, the longevity of this donation would be very high!
In addition to the reading group books, I have included a few books that have been requested by students which will be added to our classroom library!
