My Students
I work with students from PreK through sixth grade. The students in my school come from very diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. We have a large number of bilingual students, as well as a fair number of students with special needs. Many come from single-parent homes.
Approximately seventy percent of the school population qualifies for free or reduced-cost lunch. Because of the pandemic our students, like all students, have missed out on several months of education and access to books. I have no budget this year in the library and would very much like to provide them with new books that are of high interest to help bridge that achievement gap and get them excited about reading.
My Project
My students love coming to the library, and they especially love checking out new books. They have been asking for books in the library that I don't have, but I would love to honor their requests.
The best way to get our students excited about reading, is by getting books into their hands. There have been several requests for manga, easier chapter books and some of the newer children's books. Unfortunately, I don't have a budget this year to purchase new books for our library, but I don't want to disappoint the kids.
